I don't know anyone who doesn't think blacks have gotten a raw deal.

Maybe I don't hang out in all the right circles. Maybe my memory isn't so good but I recall being taught about slavery, Jim Crow and other transgressions in school. Now, I know that no one taught me about Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Massacre. Or Juneteenth or many other moments in black history. But I learned those on my own, long before black history month or black history was cool. I was just interested and wanted to know more.

On its face, I don't have a problem with CRT. However, I think there are dangers in it that make it potentially divisive. For one thing, I've heard many folks say it's based on the country being founded on slavery and racism. I would strongly argue against that because it's simply not true. The way it's been presented to me and one who presented it was a black friend of mine with tremendous pride for all things black. So he starts with exactly that founding story and I'm like, okay, let me stop you right there...

I see this as potentially dividing folks if that is the whole premise. It's not even potentially. I think we should teach about things we weren't taught, like Tulsa, especially Tulsa. And the riots all over after WWI when white troops returned home and wanted their jobs back. But if you are going to start with a preposterous thesis, only meant to make people angry and ashamed of their country, well you can put a sock in that shit.

We have our warts and we have some rotten history. But we've also done many great things. And we've learned from things we've done that were wrong. But we're still learning, still developing. I think Youngkin said he wanted a unifying message to be taught. That's exactly where I'm at. Teach the bad shit, teach the good shit. And close with a good and positive message. I'm not sure that is the agenda of CRT, pretty sure it isn't. But I'd like to know more before I say it shouldn't be taught, personally. And the flip of that is to know more before saying it should.
